Emerge Australia Ambassador• Innovator • Educator • Researcher
In this special episode of the Emerge Australia Imagine podcasts, host Anne Wilson sits down for an update with Emerge Australia’s Ambassador, Professor David Putrino based in New York, a renowned Australian expert in long COVID, ME/CFS and associated energy limiting conditions, research and treatment. Further to their last podcast conversation in 2024, Professor Putrino updates on groundbreaking work in the field, offering a ray of hope to those affected by these complex and debilitating illnesses.
“Our ability to objectively test for these conditions has really been suboptimal to date. A big part of what we are trying to achieve is improvement in pathogen diagnostics, an improvement in our understanding of how persistent pathogens affect physiology, and addressing the consequences there-in. Once we have proper objective biomarkers, we can aggressively engage in therapeutic development to provide a new generation of solutions for people who are living with these conditions.“
In the context of Long COVID Awareness Week, they delve into Professor Putrino’s recent research, discussing its implications for both patients and healthcare providers. They explore;
- potential implications of several coordinated clinical trials, the importance of improved diagnostics recognising post-exertional malaise (PEM), and the translational challenges that arise
- Professor Putrino’s collaborative work around gut biomes
- continuous lactate monitors and off-label antiviral therapies
- the value in utilising virtual reality (VR) and audio-visual (AV) in toolkits for people living with chronic pain, PTSD and long COVID rehabilitation
- early intervention strategies for healthcare providers, offering words of encouragement to the community, emphasising progress being made in understanding and treatment, and the significance of a coordinated and integrated response
“We know clinical education works, for example in a recent forum initially around 30% of doctors were unconvinced by these diagnoses – after 90 minutes of education, zero percent were unconvinced – clinical education works and we need it to be scaled.“
Don’t miss out on yet another inspiring conversation with David shining light on the path towards a better tomorrow for those living with long COVID, ME/CFS and related energy limiting conditions. Join us and be part of the change!
