Silos are a major problem in medicine. As medicine advances we have become more and more specialised and sub specialised but the problem with so many specialities is that we can lose sight of the patient as a whole, and the doctor who has the best chance of a wholistic view – the GP – has only 15 minutes to sit with these patients. This is just not adequate with these complex overlapping conditions.
Dr Cutchins also offers valuable insights and messages for policymakers, emphasising the urgent need to better support those living with Severe ME as we lead into Severe ME/CFS Day on 8 August.
We need patients to help us to figure this out. We can’t just rely on ourselves as clinicians and researchers. Let’s listen to our patients and build on their knowledge so we can come up with more progress for these patients.
This conversation is a vital step toward improved diagnosis, treatment, and support for the ME community.
