In this podcast Anne Wilson CEO Emerge Australia is in an extraordinary conversation with Professor David Putrino.

David trained as a physiotherapist before completing a PhD in Neuroscience. He is currently a Professor in the Department of Rehabilitation and Human Performance at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City and is the Nash Family Director of the Cohen Center for Recovery from Complex Chronic Illness. Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, David has been recognized globally as a leading expert in the assessment, treatment and underlying pathophysiology of long COVID. His team has managed the care of over 3000 people with long COVID and published multiple peer-reviewed scientific papers on the topic. In 2019, he was named “Global Australian of the Year” for his contributions to healthcare.

My team is committed to accelerating the rapid translation of research discoveries to pragmatic interventions that will improve the lives of the patients we serve. In the US for example, it takes 17 years for a healthcare innovation to translate from the point of discovery to the point of being integrated into common clinical practice. I get so frustrated by this long delay and my work is focused on speeding up the process of adopting new technologies that have the potential to change lives. Don’t get me wrong, I understand that incremental science is critical, but in my view, we need to change the balance of funding so that government-sponsored research portfolios include more high-risk and high-reward projects.”
